As Tokyo undertakes broad-based urban renewal, Mitsubishi Estate is involved in one of the city’s largest projects: redevelopment in Marunouchi. A financial center of Tokyo for more than 100 years, Marunouchi includes 10 percent of the companies listed in the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Business in the district accounts for 20 percent of Japan’s GDP. Mitsubishi Estate’s renewal plans call for making the area a 24-hour center of activity. The first phase of the project started in 1998 and the second phase begins in 2008.
Mitsubishi has worked on modern, high-profile projects Club Members might know, including Business Center Yurakucho, the Royal Park Shiodome Tower Hotel and the Landmark Tower in Yokohama—the tallest building in Japan. In 2005, Mitsubishi Estate received the Urban Land Institute Global Award for Excellence for reconstructing the Marunouchi Building, built in 1923 and known as Japan’s first modern office building.
